# Add birthdays and other occasion reminders

Use **Occasions** to keep important dates together and choose reminders for individual occasions. Account notification preferences and device permissions also affect whether a reminder reaches you.

## Add or edit a date

Open **Occasions** while signed in. Add an occasion, give it a useful name and date, and choose the available reminder settings. Save the occasion, then check the date and who it is for.

When editing, the reminder choices include **Same day**, **1 week before**, **2 weeks before** and **1 month before**. Pick the timing that gives you enough time to shop or send a card. Review existing reminders before adding another entry for the same event.

## Understand shared dates

Following someone does not guarantee that their birthday will appear. The person must have supplied the relevant information and made it available to you. If a date is missing, ask them or add your own reminder rather than assuming the follow did not work.

## If a reminder does not arrive

Check the occasion's reminder selection, your [notification preferences](https://giftlist.com/help/notification-preferences), the email address on your account, and the phone's GiftList notification permission. Check spam for email reminders. If the problem continues, [contact us](https://giftlist.com/contact-us) with the occasion date and device, without sharing passwords.
